A Prayer for the Journey

Well, Lord, I have come thus far – quite some way – and I may have a few years or months or days of the journey yet. Only you know. But I feel you near; and I feel the need to speak to you about life and death and... resurrection. I have never been a very religious person – well, not in words at least – but I have known your presence in my life as I have watched my seasons come and go; and I do believe – hesitantly perhaps – but deep down, I do. So I come to you now and ask you to uphold me in your loving arms, ready to carry me across the divide that leads to eternity.

I don’t particularly claim anything for myself that you should thus accept me. Oh, it’s true I haven’t committed any terrible  Crimes, I haven’t been a bad person, just the usual mix: sometimes selfish, sometimes generous. But none of that counts now, for you are all in all. If there is any good in me, it is of you. So, in anticipating our meeting, I claim only your goodness
expressed in Jesus, who somehow – I don’t follow all the theories – lived, died and rose again for me – for me to be forgiven,
to have life, to belong. I come only with his name on my lips, for I know no other in whose name I may come and who can
commend me to you. I come then, knocking at the door of your eternity, and I ask you to receive me and all those I love, 
one day into your presence. And – as far as it is granted me to remain in this earthly life – I pray that you will express your life
through me by the indweling of your Spirit, that I may touch those you have given me with your power and your love. And now, Father, grant them and grant me also your peace and prepare me well for my homecoming. In Jesus’ name.
