what’s it all about?

The word ‘Hallowe’en’ actually means ‘holy evening’, ’cos the next day was celebrated as All Saints Day – a festival of goodness and light. The idea was, see, that evil things couldn’t be active on a holy day like that, so all the bad spirits came out the evening before the light came.
Yeah, OK – whatever, but what’s Halloween today all about? Just a laugh, a chance to dress spookily and get some free sweets? Sure, but we all know there are forces of evil in the world. And they’re real. Ouija boards, spells, strange cults ... they’re no joke. And messing about with these things can be very dangerous.

You could say your life on this earth is kind of like a battle, with all the evil fighting it out against the good in the world. OK, that might sound like something out of Star Wars, but seriously we have to make sure we’re on the right side, ’cos it’s not just this life that matters, but the life after death. The good news is that God has a way you can be on his side – the good side. God came to earth as a human being, Jesus, so that he could rescue us from the evil we are trapped in, and help us to live lives that make God happy, and that don’t end with death. Jesus once said: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will have the light of life, and will never walk in darkness.” That’s God’s promise to us – he won the battle against evil, and can save us from it. All the bad stuff in the world has been defeated by Jesus when he died on the cross more than 2000 years ago, and came back to life again. He beat death once and for all!

One of Jesus’ friends said this about God: “He rescued us from the power of darkness, and brought us safe into the Kingdom of his Son (Jesus) by whom we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven."
