There is a children’s book called ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’ by Jill Tomlinson about a baby owl who was awake all day and asleep all night, driving his parents mad because they hunted at night and needed the daytime to rest. By the end of the story, the baby has overcome his fear and come to see the positive aspects of darkness. But let’s remember, he is a nocturnal creature. Humans are wired to thrive in the light.
We may thrive in the light, but we are drawn to darkness and darkness is a reality in our world, not just in a literal sense but metaphorically. Darkness is violence, pain, selfishness, greed and cruelty. Darkness is what the Bible calls ‘sin.’
Into this reality came Jesus, God made human. Jesus said he was ‘the light of the world.’ He was goodness, truth and clarity personified. His light transformed the darkness and nothing was the same again.
We can choose to live in darkness, stumbling our way around, thinking no one can see what we’re up to. Or we can walk in the light of Jesus, the light of being seen and loved, of seeing the way ahead, of blazing colour.
A prayer
Lord I confess I have been living in the dark. I am sorry and I ask for your forgiveness. Thank you that you came as the light of this world, for your death and resurrection. I choose to live in the light from now on.
Amen.
