The sunrise colours bring to mind a new day: the power of the cross in giving us a
new start and forgiveness. Something so simple – and yet so profound.
The image is made from paper layers and textures, placed over each other. The simplicity of it set against the carefully chosen words tell their own story. The yellow is brush-strokes – bright and appealing in Spring, a bold and beautiful statement.
Nina writes: “The image shows the empty cross at dawn. I like thinking of the moment just before the women go to the tomb and realise that Jesus has risen. Although they don’t know yet, everything has been done and there is such hope waiting for them. I made the image with tissue paper on a yellow background. I soaked the tissue paper with glue for the cross and the grass, so the fibres of the paper show at the edges. Easter to me is about Jesus’ victory over death, once and for all, as in the verse ‘Where, O death, is your sting?’. ”
