What are you worth?
In tough times, where do you turn? When the going gets rough, what do you hold on to?
If, as the song suggests “money makes the world go round”, what happens when the money’s not there?
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that what we earn defines us, and our possessions give us value. ‘I spend, therefore I am’. ‘You are what you buy’. The Bible has some pretty interesting things to say about that:
“... we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.” (NIV 1 Timothy 6: 7-9)
You are Valuable
Our worth as people has nothing to do with money, salary and possessions.
Our value has everything to do with the one who made us – God Himself. We are made in His image, and because of that life has meaning and we are unique beings, hugely valuable to Him and to each other.
When a rich young man came to see Jesus, he asked him a key question: “What do I need to do to inherit eternal life?”
You are loved
“Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.” (NIV Mark 10: 21-22)
Money and wealth only becomes a problem when it takes the place of God. And that was the issue for this young man.
God know what you need
Many of us worry about being able to provide for our families. We get stressed over bills and the cost of living. Maybe we struggle to tell the difference between what we want and what we need.
God knows us inside out. He knows what makes us tick. And he knows what we need to live. And if we know Him and are seeking to follow Him, he has promises and assurances for us. Check out the words of Jesus in Matthew chapter 6:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven ... seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (v 19-21, 31-33, NIV).
You future is secure in God
We don’t know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future. Nothing can separate us from the love of God, found in Jesus Christ (Romans 8: 38-39). The question is: do you know Jesus as your Lord and Saviour?
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3: 16, NIV)
Give your life to Christ, and you will know forgiveness for the past, his peace in the present, and a future hope of eternity with Him.
And no recession, credit crunch or economic crash can change that.
