Put your money into bricks and mortar they’d say – and you’ll never go wrong.
Great idea when the going’s good and everyone’s raking in the cash of course, but when the economy takes a nosedive it’s another story. Fat chance then of getting your foot anywhere near the bottom of the housing ladder, or shifting up a rung or two if you’re lucky enough to be on it.
And even if you’ve landed yourself the place of your dreams it’s likely you’re mortgaged up to the hilt to pay for it all. Lose your job or get sick and fall behind with the payments and you could find yourself out on your ear.
Worst case scenario, but it’s a worrying thought ...
In the Bible there’s a story Jesus told about houses – well, house builders actually. One is so desperate to have a roof over his head that he cuts a few corners on the foundation front and starts building on sand. (A cowboy if ever there was one.) It all looked OK to begin with, but when the bad weather arrived and the going got rough, the cracks began to appear. Soon it all came tumbling down on top of him.
The other guy was more savvy. He built his house on solid rock, so when the wind started howling around the gable end and floodwater lapped round his doorstep, he was home and dry – and his house stayed put.
What Jesus was saying was: put your faith in the things that are likely to crumble and you’re asking for trouble. Follow him and
when life throws all sorts of unpleasant stuff at you, you’ll be standing on a solid foundation that nothing on this earth can destroy – not even death.
If you feel you’ve built your life on a less than firm footing and the walls around you are on the wobbly side, it’s not too late to
ask God to give you a new foundation.
You will be safe and secure in his hands. Not just now, but forever.
