God the Provider

When we place our lives in God’s hands and make his priorities ours, we actually find that the things we need come our way.

It’s one of life’s enduring truths that the things we want and the things we need are not always the same.

And many of us end up expending huge amounts of time and energy chasing things that we want, only to find we can’t get them – or they don’t deliver what they promised.

The perfect house. The perfect body (ours or someone else’s). The perfect job. The lifestyle we’d always wanted.

Often the things we want are entirely reasonable: a stable family life, a job that is fulfilling, good health

and enough money to live comfortably. Yet when we achieve some of these, we want all the credit and sometimes feel these ‘achievements’ make us better than others.

Christians believe that all good things come from God, and that to get life in the right order, we need to put him first. In the Old Testament, the people of God had many different names for him, and one of these was God our Provider.

When we place our lives in God’s hands and make his priorities ours, we actually find that the things we need come our way.

As Jesus put it: “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear ... seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well ... where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12: 22, 31, 34)
