RMS Titanic was the world’s largest passenger steamship when it set sail from Southampton, bound for New York, on 10 April 1912.
Designed by highly experienced engineers, the ship used some of the most advanced technologies and extensive safety features of the time.
Carrying 2,223 people on board the Titanic struck an iceberg four days into its maiden voyage, and more than 1,500 people lost their lives, in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.
Some pointed at the failure of iceberg warning radio messages to reach the bridge in time, others thought the ship was travelling too fast. And there was widespread outrage that many of the 16 lifeboats left the ship well below capacity.
As the story has both horrified and fascinated us over the past 100 years, the myths and legends have multiplied, assisted by popular films including James Cameron’s 1997 Hollywood blockbuster.
Yet the reality is that seemingly solid, unsinkable institutions do get sunk. Banks crash. Leading businesses fold.

Powerful leaders are toppled. And disaster can strike us too.
Life can be uncertain – and the Bible makes it very clear that all of us have a choice in how we live.
We can go our own way. Or we can go God’s way. We can trust our own judgements, and rely on our own abilities. Or we can put our trust in God’s Son Jesus, and entrust our future to him.
You are priceless to God. He made you and wants you to know him personally. But we fall short of the standards he requires – rather like icebergs, sin brings us down and threatens to sink us.
The good news is that through the death and resurrection of Jesus, we can be made right with God – and given a fresh start with him.
“God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
We can stubbornly go our own way, and see our lives shipwrecked – or we can board the lifeboat that Jesus offers. It’s the way to forgiveness, peace and real hope for the future.
